&lt;p&gt;I wanted to support transparency, and I wasn't sure about PNG and transparency. (In fact, browser support for PNG transparency remains &lt;a href="http://entropymine.com/jason/testbed/pngtrans/" rel="nofollow"&gt;very dodgy&lt;/a&gt;.)&lt;/p&gt;
