I speak of the kind of surfers who are searching for AVRack Skins and find an OddThinking article fifth on the list!

It gets worse. At the time of writing, if you search for avrack skins in AOL, the above mentioned article appears fifth on the list, but this very article appears fourth.

Sorry to my 2-star readers. I only hope your find that AdSense has the smarts to offer you relevant advertising!

Ray: make sure you have Arial Unicode MS installed. It used to be available for download from Microsoft in a file called Aruniupd.exe but not anymore; it comes with Office, I think? For browsers other than IE, according to Phil Ringnalda:

You need something from the list here – Code2000 covers a ton of things if you’re willing to spend $5 on shareware, OpenSymbol is included in OpenOffice if you’re willing to download a few squillion bytes to get a font, or the Free UCS fonts will cover a big chunk of Unicode with GNU-goodness.

Ray,

The missing characters (★) are black stars. The characters you can see (☆) are outlined (white) stars. Both are Unicode characters right next to each other in the character maps.

I thought I was running the most Unicode-hostile environment (IE6 on Windows), so I figured if it displayed for me, it would display for everyone. I guess not… sorry.

What browser and OS are you using?

(I haven’t tested this article in Firefox: it just started jamming up today – about the same time I installed the Microsoft WMF fix; admittedly I haven’t rebooted yet.)

What’s with the question marks in the headings?
(First heading is five ?, second is 1 star, 4 ? and so on).
Am I missing some font?

Update: I am now official corrupted by the influences of advertising.

I believe Sam Ruby has set his weblog up this way. He considers it an extra “bonus” that the Google adverts don’t work when the pages are served as application/xhtml+xml (which is what Firefox-powered surfers get; Opera folks too, I think).
