{"id":10,"date":"2005-04-16T18:46:52","date_gmt":"2005-04-16T08:46:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/somethinkodd.com\/oddthinking\/?p=10"},"modified":"2007-10-07T20:49:20","modified_gmt":"2007-10-07T10:49:20","slug":"outliers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.somethinkodd.com\/oddthinking\/2005\/04\/16\/outliers\/","title":{"rendered":"Statistical Outliers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!-- UnMarkedDown_2_01132526254--><\/p>\n<p>A lecturer in statistics once explained to me that when you had a large sample of measurements, it is sometimes necessary to identify the &#8220;outliers&#8221;; values which are either very suspicious (if there is a risk of experimental error) or very interesting because they are so far outside of the normal range of values.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a quick classification of outliers based on how far away they are from the mean value &#8211; either they are classed as &#8220;near&#8221; or &#8220;far&#8221; &#8211; for those who have to know, it depends on how many IQRs (Interquartile Ranges) they are from the mean value.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t get a sudden deep understanding of statistics that day.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t get a mathematical tool that I have found useful again and again.<\/p>\n<p>I did, however, get a sudden new goal in life.
