{"id":1134,"date":"2010-01-21T12:27:13","date_gmt":"2010-01-21T02:27:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.somethinkodd.com\/oddthinking\/?p=1134"},"modified":"2010-01-21T12:27:13","modified_gmt":"2010-01-21T02:27:13","slug":"self-scaling-log-files","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.somethinkodd.com\/oddthinking\/2010\/01\/21\/self-scaling-log-files\/","title":{"rendered":"Self-Scaling Log Files"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I present another half-formed idea for your consideration and hopeful implementation&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>So, I am debugging some software (mine? 3rd party? whatever) and I need more information, so I decrease the logging threshold, so more messages will be written to the log file.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, I turn that off again, because the problem seems to be finally is fixed, and hasn&#8217;t recurred for several days or weeks (or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.somethinkodd.com\/oddthinking\/2005\/11\/22\/hunting-intermittent-bugs\/\">6 runs<\/a>) so there is no point wasting time and disk-space with pointless information.<\/p>\n<p>Who am I kidding? I never turn it off. Why would I go back and touch a <em>working<\/em> piece of software weeks later? Especially if it involves taking down a service that people are depending on!<\/p>\n<p>So my half-formed idea, for someone else to run with, is an <em>option<\/em> for log files which scales back the logging over time. <\/p>\n<p>It could use the age since the software was built, or the sourcefiles were edited, or the config files were changed, whatever. If no-one is tinkering with the system, save the effort of logging.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s as far as I have got. I&#8217;ve got to go now.
