{"id":1203,"date":"2010-04-16T02:50:00","date_gmt":"2010-04-15T16:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.somethinkodd.com\/oddthinking\/?p=1203"},"modified":"2010-04-16T02:50:00","modified_gmt":"2010-04-15T16:50:00","slug":"spatula-silly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.somethinkodd.com\/oddthinking\/2010\/04\/16\/spatula-silly\/","title":{"rendered":"Spatula Silly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If my high school Craft teacher was correct, there are two types of plastics: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thermoplastic\" title=\"Wikipedia definition of Thermoplastic\" class=\"wikipedia\">Thermoplastics<\/a> that melt and can be reshaped, and <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thermosetting_polymer\" title=\"Wikipedia definition of Thermosetting_polymer\" class=\"wikipedia\">Thermosets<\/a> that don&#8217;t melt; they decompose at much higher temperatures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If <em>I<\/em> was taught this basic fact at the age of 12, then presumably it is well-known to those skilled in the art of producing mass-plastic items.<\/p>\n<p>So riddle me this:<\/p>\n<p>Why are plastic <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spatulas\" title=\"Wikipedia definition of Spatulas\" class=\"wikipedia\">spatulas<\/a> (of the type used for flipping food on Teflon-coated frying pans) made of Nylon &#8211; a thermoplastic that leaves melts black muck all over the frying pan if it is absent-mindedly left on the heat?<\/p>\n<p>Why can&#8217;t they make it out of a heat-resistant thermoset, so I don&#8217;t have to keep looking for a clean place to rest my greasy spatula?<\/p>\n<p>This question has plagued me for years &#8211; and several spatulas.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Article proudly sponsored by: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DpsMGpMIqNk\">Spatula City<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Aren&#8217;t you bored of all these articles in the blogosphere, yammering about the finer points of spatula manufacture?
