{"id":1581,"date":"2011-10-28T03:40:54","date_gmt":"2011-10-27T17:40:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.somethinkodd.com\/oddthinking\/?p=1581"},"modified":"2011-10-28T03:40:54","modified_gmt":"2011-10-27T17:40:54","slug":"confusing-spammer-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.somethinkodd.com\/oddthinking\/2011\/10\/28\/confusing-spammer-strategy\/","title":{"rendered":"Confusing Spammer Strategy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, there is this spam web-site, that has grabbed snippets from a number of RSS feeds about Kakuro solvers (including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.somethinkodd.com\/oddthinking\/2006\/02\/12\/a-kakuro-solver\/\">this site<\/a>), and put them all on one page in the hope of getting some Google juice for a search term.<\/p>\n<p>To squeeze some of my Page Rank, it then attempted to leave some pingback spam, so that I would link to it.  (Yes, they got their link successfully, for the 45 minutes it took for me to delete it, but with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.somethinkodd.com\/oddthinking\/2006\/09\/08\/not-following-the-no-nofollow-following\/\">No Follow<\/a> tags, so there was no point.)<\/p>\n<p>So far, nothing special.<\/p>\n<p>On their page, was an image they had stolen from me &#8211; a partially solved Kakuro. But, they flipped the image left-right. For many images that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/krulwich\/2011\/10\/18\/141484116\/no-not-that-left-your-other-left?f=5500502&#038;ft=1\">would not be noticable<\/a> but for this image, which consisted mainly of numbers, it stood out.<\/p>\n<p>Presumably, this was to stop me automatically detecting that my image had been stolen&#8230; but why did they send me a pingback to bring my attention to it?<\/p>\n<p>The site is in the United Arab Emirates, so I suppose a DMCA takedown is out of the question?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So, there is this spam web-site, that has grabbed snippets from a number of RSS feeds about Kakuro solvers (including this site), and put them all on one page in the hope of getting some Google juice for a search term.
