{"id":217,"date":"2006-03-25T22:54:58","date_gmt":"2006-03-25T11:54:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.somethinkodd.com\/oddthinking\/2006\/03\/25\/hubris\/"},"modified":"2006-03-25T22:54:58","modified_gmt":"2006-03-25T11:54:58","slug":"hubris","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.somethinkodd.com\/oddthinking\/2006\/03\/25\/hubris\/","title":{"rendered":"Hubris"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve got a question about the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\">Wiktionary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now that I have write access to a dictionary, am I allowed to make some of the corrections that the English language sorely needs?<\/p>\n<p>For example, we quickly need to either entirely reverse the meaning of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Hubris\">hubris<\/a>&#8221; or just quit using it.<\/p>\n<p>I have noticed the word has become more popular recently. I notice because every time I hear it, I have to pause to recall remember whether it is a good thing or a bad thing.<\/p>\n<p>The word &#8220;hubris&#8221; <em>sounds<\/em> like should be a good thing. Saying someone has a &#8220;sense of hubris&#8221; makes it sound like they have a nice mix of a sense of humility, humanity and humour.<\/p>\n<p>Whoever decided it should actually mean &#8220;conceit&#8221; was clearly having a bad day and made a simple error.
