{"id":351,"date":"2007-03-08T07:42:09","date_gmt":"2007-03-07T20:42:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.somethinkodd.com\/oddthinking\/2007\/03\/08\/the-suck-of-myspace\/"},"modified":"2007-10-07T20:01:25","modified_gmt":"2007-10-07T10:01:25","slug":"the-suck-of-myspace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.somethinkodd.com\/oddthinking\/2007\/03\/08\/the-suck-of-myspace\/","title":{"rendered":"The Suck of MySpace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Until recently, MySpace didn&#8217;t hold much interest for me.<\/p>\n<p>Last weekend, I have discovered dozens of friends and acquaintances have MySpace accounts.<\/p>\n<p>I am starting a Pro\/Con list for whether I want one.<\/p>\n<h3>Do I want a MySpace account?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8211; I already have a blog.<\/li>\n<li>+ It can help me remember the people I&#8217;ve met.<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; The cluttered look-and-feel makes me cringe.<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; The automatic playing of background audio when you visit a site is an evil that I should not encourage.<\/li>\n<div class=\"aside\">Browser support to restrict this is surely coming, right?<\/div>\n<li>&#8211; The spelling.<\/li>\n<li>+ I can keep track of old friends.<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; The Ghost of MySpace past.<\/li>\n<li>+ I can find people I have lost contact with in the past and, if desired, rekindle the friendship.<\/li>\n<li>+ Great way to meet new and interesting people.<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; I frequently meet lots of new and interesting people in the 15-24 year age group. My challenge is to meet new and interesting age-appropriate people, who are outside the MySpace target demographic.<\/li>\n<li>+ Offers a softer intermediate between never seeing a friend-of-a-friend again and exchanging phone numbers.<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; I was speaking to an interesting 20-odd guy the other day, and we wondered whether sharing details of an on-line presence was a particularly poor way of getting to know someone.<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; If you really want to know my star-sign, I don&#8217;t think I want to pursue a friendship with you.<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; If you really want to know my musical tastes, I don&#8217;t think you&#8217;ll want to pursue a friendship with me.<\/li>\n<li>+ Easy to set-up.<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; Difficult to balance privacy issues. (Is it just me who cringes when people publish personal messages to the public blog of a friend?)<\/li>\n<li>+ Networking, networking, networking.<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; The whole confusion between what is a &#8220;friend&#8221;. One acquaintance of mine is apparently friends with Woody Allen, according to MySpace. That means he is a fan.
