OddThinking

A blog for odd things and odd thoughts.

Reminder: Free Beer, this Thursday

If you are in Sydney, come and have a drink on OddThinking and Google. As promised, I am celebrating the fourth anniversary of OddThinking by putting my Adsense money on the bar. There have been a few confirmations, but still few enough that it looks like we will be drinking cognac and cocktails all night. That will be fun, but I would rather see a few more people, even if it forces us to drink free beer rather than free cocktails. (“Free, as in cocktails” doesn’t have the same ring as “free, as in beer”)

The rule remains, you are very welcome to come – whether you are a regular commenter, lurker, or just a lucky web-searcher looking for free beer, but you can only come if you read the invite here on the blog.

Where? The Australian Hotel

When? Thurs, April 9, from 7pm until the money runs out. (Get there early so you can eat their pumpkin pizza. Yum!)

No-one suggested a decent way for me to identify myself to lurkers, so look for the table with the broken keyboard on it. (I just fished it from the rubbish bin; it’ll make an easily recognisable token.)

Come along and I will explain in person all my excuses for not posting recently: illness, an upcoming photography exhibition, a puzzle competition and trying to migrate photos to my new photo database (Yes! I made a decision, but haven’t blogged it yet!)

I hope to see many of you there.

  1. Julian,

Probably can’t make it on short notice (my not having read your blog at the right time).

If you find any jobs (C++, Windows, etc) whilst out carousing, please send them my way.

    Are you /still/[1] gainfully unemployed?

    Geoff
    [1] I don’t speak XHTML, sorry
[2] your [Preview] button gets the time wrong[3]
[3] still shuddering from dealing with files where “Was this time DST … or not?” was an important but frequently unanswered question

  2. Sorry we’ll miss you. I’ll keep my ears open for C++ jobs.

Yes, I am still mostly gainfully unemployed, but I am starting to transition into some low-key, low-pressure, work-from-home development projects.

WordPress doesn’t use the underlying OS to handle Daylight Savings. As the WordPress interface has said for some time:

Unfortunately, you have to manually update this for Daylight Savings Time. Lame, we know, but will be fixed in the future.

My solution is to simply not display the time on the blog. You don’t really need to know whether I posted an article at 11am or 10am (or 3am). I have now fixed the Preview interface to suppress the time display as well. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
